Have you seen someone whose hair is always moist with sweat? Or have you seen a bald person who always has beads of sweat on his head? That person with excessive sweating of the scalp may have scalp hyperhidrosis.
Since sweating is a normal part of life, you may be asking when is it classified as profuse sweating. You must know that first, sweating is the process that aids in cooling down the temperature of the body. Therefore, when the body needs to cool down like during exercise, more sweat will be produced. This means that more sweat will be produced when a person is doing exercise or any form of physical exertion and while under the sun or inside a hot place.
If that person is not physically exerting himself, let’s say he is sitting on a couch flipping through a magazine, he must not sweat too much. A person must also not sweat a lot when the climate is cold or during winter season . Therefore, if you see someone sweating a lot while completely relaxed inside an air-conditioned room, that is no longer considered natural. That person may already have hyperhidrosis.
Stress and anxiety have also been established to make a person perspire a lot. Therefore, it is normal for a person to sweat more if he or she is going to a job interview. Going out on a date also makes some people nervous and consequently sweat more. But if that person is still sweating profusely while he or she is relaxing, that may already be a sign of hyperhidrosis.
Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis means that too much sweat is being released by your body all the time regardless of what a person is doing, where the person is, and how the person feels. If a person observes that he or she is sweating extremely when compared to everyone around him or her, a visit to the doctor is needed.
In diagnosing hyperhidrosis, the doctor will first get the person’s medical history and do a physical examination. The doctor will also request for laboratory tests to find out if the patient has any disease. If the laboratory results are all normal, the patient will be referred to a dermatologist.
The dermatologist will conduct a sweat thermoregulatory test to diagnose if the patient has hyperhidrosis or not. If the patient is diagnosed with hyperhidrosis, the dermatologist will discuss with the patient certain factors that may aggravate the excessive sweating. The dermatologist will also discuss the methods of treatment like iontophoresis, antiperspirants, botox injections, anticholinergic medicines, and others. The patient will also be told not to worry because hyperhidrosis is not considered a serious medical illness. Truth is, since hyperhidrosis is not a result of an underlying illness, people who have it are otherwise healthy.
People with scalp hyperhidrosis must always read important information regarding their condition in order to know how to treat and prevent it.
